Shepherd Wheel

The Friends of the Porter Valley (FOPV) are a conservation group concerned with the area of parks, woodlands, and farmland of the Porter Valley in the south-west of Sheffield.

Their purpose is to preserve and enhance the natural and historical characteristics of the Porter Valley between Hunters Bar and Porter Clough.

Working in liaison with Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust and Sheffield City Council, the Friends of Porter Valley support the management of the public areas of the valley which includes working to restore the dams and the Shepherd Wheel Restoration Project.

Are you interested in Sheffield's Industrial Heritage?

Shepherd Wheel is an important survivor that illustrates an important aspect of Sheffield’s industrial heritage. The site will be open to the public at weekends and to education groups in the week to explore the site, its history and to see the water wheel in operation.

Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust (SIMT) is responsible for providing public access, operating the waterwheel and delivering the learning sessions at the site.

Volunteers are needed at Shepherd Wheel to help on Saturdays and Sundays to talk to visitors about Shepherd Wheel, to help them understand the site, its history and what it was like to work there.
