Kelham Island Museum cancels Christmas market

MEDIA STATEMENT
02 December 2010

Sheffield Industrial Museum Trust has reluctantly made the decision to cancel their annual Victorian Christmas Market, which was due to take place this weekend (Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th December) at Kelham Island Museum.

John Hamshere Chief Executive of Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust said,
"It is with huge regret that we are cancelling the Christmas market.
"Due to the weather conditions in Sheffield and advice from the authorities not to travel unless necessary, the decision was made to cancel the event.
"This was a tough decision and it was made in the interest of public safety. It is a sad blow for Kelham Island Museum"

The event this year was set to be the 19th annual Victorian Christmas Market, the biggest event in the Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust calendar. Last year it attracted over 12,000 visitors and the cancellation will have a significant impact for the Museum which is a charitable trust.

Stall holders are being contacted and anyone who would like further information are advised to visit the website www.simt.co.uk email ask@simt.co.uk or call 0114 272 2106.

Lord Mayor's visit raises festive spirit

Kelham Island Museum Victorian Christmas Market Lord Mayor

Councillor Alan Law JP, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield 2010 - 2011, visited Kelham Island this chilly Monday morning following a factory tour of our close neighbour and supporter Ernest Wright & Son.

We we're delighted that Sheffield's 114th Lord Mayor took time to join SIMT Chief Executive John Hamshere and other guests for a tour of the new-look Museum. Pictured here with Events and Marketing Officer Niki Connolly, the Lord Mayor showed his support for the event now in it's 19th year by donning our cheerful Victorian Market Top Hat, the brightly coloured icon of this year's exciting marketing campaign.

Ernest Wright and Son (formerly known as Kutrite) are a family company hand-making quality scissors and shears here in Sheffield since 1902. Based on Russell Street just around the corner from the Museum, you won't have far to go to see a shining example of quality 'Made in Sheffield' goods. Or find them here in our Museum Shop as part of the Victorian Christmas Market taking place on Sat 4 and Sun 5 Dec.
