‘Can you make us a magnetic map?' - that's what students from Sheffield Volunteering were asked to do for the Hawley Gallery as part of Sheffield University's ‘Just Do It' scheme. So, on Sunday 13 March 2011, ten students arrived at Kelham Island Museum ready to create a magnetic map of Sheffield. Visitors to the Hawley Gallery will be able to use the map to find Sheffield tool makers past and present.

The students created a map that shows the 5 rivers of Sheffield, the villages that are now the suburbs around Sheffield, plus packs of magnetic pictures of Sheffield tool making companies from the 1800s up to today.

To check that the map worked, the students asked visitors to the Hawley Gallery to try out the activities - and the map worked fantastically! Amidst much talking and laughing the students and visitors exchanged information on what Sheffield was like in the past.

The Magnetic Map will now be in use in the Hawley Gallery, just inside the ‘Tool Shop' area. Come and see if you can work out where the ‘big names' of tool making were to be found in Sheffield.

Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust and The Ken Hawley Collection Trust have joined forces to bring you a series of fascinating talks and family activities celebrating Science Week 2011
