Design for Life Celebration
3rd April 11
Pupils from Silverdale School celebrated the culmination of the exciting 'Design for Life' project with a visit to the Hawley Gallery at Kelham Island Museum to see their work on show as part of the latest temporary exhibition - ‘Make Your Mark!'.
The ‘Design for Life' project, funded by the Victoria & Albert Museum, brings together designers, teachers and museums in creative design projects. This year, pupils from Silverdale School took marks and mark making as their inspiration acknowledging Sheffield's world famous reputation as an important producer of edge tools, cutlery and silverware which are still exported worldwide today. All these Sheffield-Made products were given marks to identify their quality and advertise the company that made them, just as trademarks and logos are used today.
Pupils explored what made a good mark using objects and archive materials from the Hawley Collection at Kelham Island Museum and by visiting the Sheffield Assay Office.
Shaun Taylor, a graphic designer from Modern Creatives worked with Chris Wright, a Design Technology teacher at Silverdale School, to give the youngsters a brief to design their own mark for a product of their choice.
The inventive designs they created are now on show as part of the temporary exhibition - ‘Make Your Mark!' - in the Hawley Gallery until the end of June 2011.
