This summer take a fresh look at Sheffield's history with People, Places, Processes - the exciting new exhibition at Kelham Island Museum

People, Places, Processes Exhibition Kelham Island Museum

From 17 July to 18 September the Museum will be exhibiting art work from its collection and offering a glimpse into the People, Places, and Processes that made Sheffield into one of the greatest industrial cities in the world.

Place, People, Processes Exhibition Kelham Island Museum

Regular visitors to the museum will be familiar with its unique objects and the large machines of Sheffield's industrial past; but amongst the well known objects can be found a small yet significant art collection. The art collection offers an important insight into the nature of working life in the city and every picture has a story to tell. In the exhibition painted canvases show the drama of steel production, portraits provide a personal connection to the people who forged the city and scenic views set a context into which great inventions, achievements and work took place.

People, Places, Processes Exhibition Kelham Island Museum

In the display you will discover paintings, engravings and photographs and even one of Yorkshire's Favourite Paintings. This summer's exhibition also coincides with a national project by the BBC and The Public Catalogue Foundation to record the entire UK national collection of oil paintings. Look out for related TV programmes on the BBC or to find out more about the paintings in our collection, log onto the project website at: www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/

Admission is free to the exhibition. Normal admission applies for entry into Kelham Island Museum

Sheffield Children's Festival

Over 900 pupils from primary schools across Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and North Derbyshire are taking part in this exciting challenge to build an green and sustainable community at the 'Build It' event at Kelham Island Industrial Museum.

Using materials, including cardboard, felt, sticky tape, wood, paper, pipe cleaners and cotton bobbins, the pupils will create a building for the town, which once created will be placed onto a 25m2 floor map.

Business & Education South Yorkshire, the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust work in partnership to organise Build It which supports key aspects of the national curriculum for Science, Technology, Geography and English.

The teams of pupils aged 5 to 11 from over 90 Primary schools will create buildings ranging from a wind farm, transport interchange, a farm, hospital, café, post office, police station, petrol station, health centre and a place of worship!

Some of South Yorkshire's leading construction industry experts will be on hand to help the budding builders to design and construct their projects. This fun-day challenge helps young people get to grips with science, technology and enterprise skills through working together to plan, cost and build a range of buildings, mechanisms and vehicles. It is through the young people's creativity that a community comes to life.

Mary Milburn, Build It co-ordinator for Business & Education South Yorkshire, explains: "Build It is a great chance for primary school pupils to work together in teams and learn more about the construction industry. This event is action packed every day from start to finish, with pupils getting the chance to find out more about the issues that are associated with the construction industry. We have experts from some of South Yorkshire's leading construction companies here on hand to help, giving young people guidance and advice, which is all important as they start to learn more about the world of work."
