Heritage Open Day

As part of National Heritage Open Days we welcome you to experience Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet at the time of the Sheffield Blitz! Join us on Sun 12 Sept 11am - 4.45pm and enjoy free admission as part of this exciting national campaign.
Heritage Open Days celebrates England's fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, ranging from castles to factories, town halls to tithe barns, parish churches to Buddhist temples. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. Free of charge and literally on people's doorstep, Heritage Open Days is an event for everyone, whatever their background, age and ability!
Families can enjoy living history tours and kids will learn broom handle drills and what to do when an incendiary bomb comes through the roof! Plus find out more about that historic night in December 1940 when Sheffield was blitzed!

We are welcoming applications from new and existing stallholders for this year's Victorian Christmas Market - Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 December 2010
Last year's market attracted over 12,000 visitors over the two day event and we hope to draw even more along this year with an exciting stalls and family entertainment programme.

Hawley Gallery Wotsit Session

Ever wondered Wotsit?
Our 'Wotsit' session takes place on Sunday 29 August 12pm - 3pm at Kelham Island Museum and is a great opportunity to bring along your own mystery tools for identification. Let Ken Hawley and his volunteers give you expert explanation of how they were used.
Admission is free and the session gives a fascinating insight into the internationally renowned collection of tools housed within the Hawley Gallery along with a fun quiz for all tool enthusiasts out there!

Wakes Weekend celebrations at Kelham Island Museum
2nd August 10
Over 2000 people joined us to celebrate the Sheffield Wakes Weekends and for many the start of the holidays! The 1940's style event launched the new National Fairground Archive Resource Room at Kelham Island Museum in partnership with the University of Sheffield.
Visitors were treated to 1940's song and dance with Major Swing, Peter Bolton and friends.
Peter Harper 1930s/1940s Vocalist entertained visitors as they explored the Museum.
P.E.Casper esquire filled the air with the familiar sounds of George Formby.
The Everly Pregnant Brothers performed live in front of Yorkshire Film Archive footage of Holidays at Home from days gone by.
Inside the Museum children were intrigued and wowed by Professor Jon's Flea Circus.
Youngsters also found out more about the mighty River Don Engine and life on the Home Front with our Living History characters and children could design a candlestick to celebrate VE Day in the Hawley Gallery.
Outside a range of Street Performers performed for enthralled crowds. The Danger Boys thrilled with their acrobatic skills and there was a touch of magic in the air from Man in a Box and Steve Faulkner Escapologist!

1940's enthusiasts and visitors did us proud dressed in original and vintage style clothing and sharing tales of wartime life.

Vintage and Craft Stalls offered a wide range of goods, from antique jewellery to craft items made from vintage fabrics and make and mend demonstrations.
