New app for young visitors to Kelham Island Museum
Young visitors to Sheffield’s Kelham Island Museum can now add a digital dimension to their experience, thanks to the launch of a new app.
The Kelham Visitor Explorer App is free to download for both Apple and Android devices, and has three different levels within it: Sensory Stories for under 5s, Hidden Histories for 12+, and a Young People’s version for teenagers.
Visitors can also have fun taking black and white ‘souvenir selfies’ using pre-loaded photos from the photos from the museum archives.
“The app is designed to give young people a quirky view of the museum and within it we have the three tours for different ages,” said Rebecca Walton, learning programme co-ordinator at Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust.
“Everyone who visits the museum and downloads it will have an enhanced experience. It will help them navigate their way around and ensure young people get the most they can out of their visit.”
The Kelham Explorer App was funded by Arts Council England and is the second app to be launched by Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust - the first, the Abbeydale Explorer App, has proved popular with visitors to Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet.
And it’s hoped that the Kelham Explorer App, which is already getting great online reviews - will allow downloaders to ‘unlock’ extra information about some exhibits.
“It gives everyone a range of information about the museum that they might not have known before,” said Rebecca.
“There’s also a treasure hunt feature which is great for children of all ages. They have to go round and unlock the objects and if they get all six they will also get 10 per cent off items in the shop.
“And if you haven’t got access to a smart phone – or don’t have enough to go round for everyone in your group - iPads can be borrowed within the museum which are pre-loaded with the app.”
