The prestigious Hawley Collection is on the move to its new home in the Hawley Gallery at Kelham Island Museum.
The new gallery has been created in a refurbished industrial building on the Kelham Island Museum site, using a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Hawley Collection - a record of tool making past and present - was created by Sheffielder Ken Hawley, who began collecting tools in the 1950s.
This internationally important collection of over 100,000 objects includes edge tools, measuring tools, tools used for cutlery manufacture and silversmithing, plus related catalogues, photos, films and oral histories. It is gathered mostly from Sheffield and Yorkshire but also from Britain and the rest of the world.
The Hawley Gallery will provide a dedicated display area for the Collection, together with storage and research facilities. Objects are being moved from their current home at the University of Sheffield into the new Gallery over the next few months and the displays will start to be installed in January.
The Gallery opens to the public from Wednesday 17 March 2010. See our blog and news pages for further updates!
