What Do We Collect - General Collections
Library
The library is an important resource holding material that is unlikely to be found elsewhere and access
is freely available to the general public and researchers by appointment. The library is frequently used
by researchers and authors. Two major steel companies donated a large percentage of the material. The
library is therefore very strong on historic texts.
The library consists of over 7,000 books and journals. Categories covered are biography, company history,
social and economic history, local history, industrial history, armaments, transport, metallurgy, engineering,
trades and crafts, mining, local catalogues and general directories.
Aspects of particular importance are the books and pamphlets on company histories and the collection
of 'product' catalogues that the Museum holds. Also of interest are the rare publications on armaments
and on steel development.
