What Do We Collect - Heavy Industries
The Armaments Industry Collection
In armaments, Sheffield is well known for both the quality and craftsmanship of its early pieces from the
late 17th century onwards, and for leading the field in technological developments and the production of
heavier arms and armour plate. This is particularly the case for the navy, from the late 19th century
onwards where development and demand climaxed during both world wars. By the beginning of the 20th
century Sheffield was known as "the Arsenal of the World".
Of the collection held at the Trust, a total of 150 items relate to the manufacture of small armaments
and accessories such as cartridge loading equipment and gun barrel cutters. The stronger side of the
collection is the material which relates to the heavy arms and armour and the race to produce it. Some
of the manufacturing equipment is also mentioned elsewhere as it often has many roles but it was felt
important to highlight this aspect of the collection.
Important examples include the River Don Engine, samples of armoured plate, rare books and plans,
company histories, photographic material, shells and bombs (including a ‘Grand Slam Bomb’ designed
by Barnes Wallis, one of the few examples that survive).
