Donating to the Collections
SIMT manages the Industrial collections on behalf of Sheffield City Council. Kelham Island Museum, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and Shepherd Wheel contain many objects kindly donated by members of the public.
Please note that SIMT can only accept objects according to an agreed set of guidelines set out in our Acquisitions Policy. Please ask if you would like to see a copy of the policy.
We collect objects that tell the industrial story of Sheffield. It is often important that the objects were made or came from or were used within the local area.
- Objects with a local connection, where you can tell us its history
We will have to check
- Whether it is in good condition
- Whether it fits within the guidelines of our Acquisition Policy
- Whether we already have a similar example
It is important that you speak to a member of the Museum Services team before leaving your object at the Museum. Please ask at reception to make an appointment. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to see you immediately.
Objects can only be left at the Museum by prior arrangement and a deposit form must be completed. It is important that we record your name, address and all the details you can give us about the item.
Please note objects should not be left at the reception desk.
If we cannot accept the object, please do not be offended. We may already have similar examples or your object may be too big or of a type that we do not collect. It may be that another museum may be more suitable and the curator will be able to tell you how to contact them.
If we accept your object, then it will be accessioned and the ownership will be transferred to the museum permanently. This means you and your family will not be able to claim these gifts back.
