SIMT Visit to Special Quality Alloys
Posted on by Website Administrator
A huge thank you to our friends at Special Quality Alloys who kindly welcomed SIMT staff members last week for a tour of the works.
Special Quality Alloys Ltd is part of the Special Steel Group which was formed back in 1925. The company is still family owned today, employs around 260 people and has several sites in the Attercliffe area of Sheffield. They manufacture forgings for the Oil & Gas, Power Generation, Aerospace & General Engineering industries.
There is so much industry remaining in Sheffield and we were fascinated seeing the skilled workers in action with the 5 open-die forging hammers.
Also interesting was hearing all about the history of the site. In 2014 Special Quality Alloys moved into the recently vacated Continental Steel Works. This site dates back to 1870 and was once the home of the iconic tool steel manufacturer Jonas & Colver. Back in 1904, Joseph Jonas of Jonas & Colver became the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and later that year he was knighted.
We look forward to a reciprocal visit from SQA to our SIMT sites in the future!
