Big Ideas with the Kelham Creators!

Kelham Island Museum is now home to a new toddler group with a difference!

Kelham Creators is a volunteer-led play group for children aged 2 to 5 which is focused around child-led play, and engagement with the museum and Sheffield’s industrial history. Each session is based around a different part of the museum using exploration, play, songs and stories to bring history to life. Expect to see lots of engines, machines and tools and hear lots of thuds and bangs as each session ends with a demonstration of the River Don engine!

Our pilot session was inspired by Lizzie the Elephant and the new Little Herd elephants around Sheffield, where the children followed Lizzie’s special trail around the museum and learnt her story. Other sessions will explore Sheffield’s steel industry, tram works and even her role during the First World War! During each session every child is invited to create something related to the museum through craft activities which they are welcome to keep.

If you are interested in Kelham Creators, the group is due to start in September 2016 and will run once a month on a six session cycle. Please contact Maria Flude at for further details or to book a place for you and your child.
