Become a Kelham Creators Volunteer at Kelham Island Museum: get creative and help young children have fun and learn!

“I’ve really enjoyed meeting and interacting with local families”

“I love seeing the children enjoying themselves and getting involved”

“Kelham Creators gives you the freedom to put your ideas into practice”

“Kelham Creators is perfect for someone looking to get creative and work with families!”

Volunteers like Megan support Kelham Island Museum to deliver Kelham Creators, a monthly family activity group for children aged under five. Each month Kelham Creators has a different theme, linked to the museum and its collections.

Megan started volunteering at Kelham Island Museum in March 2016, and was part of a volunteer-led group which first set up Kelham Creators. With staff support, volunteers came up with the themes for each session, and planned activities, trails and stories for each session. The great thing about Kelham Creators is that volunteers can plan and try out their ideas for different activities or themes.

Sessions take place on the first Tuesday of the month in the museum’s soft play area, The Melting Shop. Sessions include: a welcome song, introductory story or play, museum trail, craft activity, and always finish with the Kelham Island Museum Song, which has been written specifically for Kelham Creators.

Megan has really enjoyed meeting and getting to know the museum’s other volunteers. Maria, the Community Participation Officer at Kelham Island Museum is friendly, supportive and happy to help volunteers with anything! Maria organises volunteer meetings, training sessions and supervision meetings so that volunteers are all supported in their roles. Megan wants to work in museum education, and so volunteering with Kelham Creators is giving her valuable experience to help kick start her career.
