25th Victorian Christmas Market

Posted on by Website Administrator

A warm Dickensian welcome awaits visitors to Kelham Island Museum’s 25th annual Victorian Christmas Market.

Our popular market returns on Saturday 2 December (10am - 7pm) and Sunday 3 December (10am - 5pm) where you can soak up the atmosphere of a traditional Dickensian Christmas as you gather under atmospheric gaslamps and wander cobbled streets to enjoy over 130 bustling market stalls, festive entertainment and warming food and drinks.

From its humble beginnings as a community market, the event has grown significantly and welcomes around 14,500 visitors over its two day period.  The market is unique in that, in keeping with the ethos of Sheffield Industrial Museums, emphasis is placed on local ‘Sheffield, Made’ and handmade goods and the promotion of traditional crafts and skills and local makers, artisans and performers.

2017 sees the market’s 25th silver anniversary year and we will be celebrating with two exciting market twilight finale performances. On Saturday from 6.30pm see the mystical Mr Fox Fire performance with masked performers, drummers and acoustic music. On Sunday, Langsett Dance Orchestra will take to the stage at 3pm bringing a feel-good festive close to the event.

Festive themed market quarters include:

•   Sheffield, Made - traditional crafts and skills from local artists, craftspeople and artisans

This area includes Sheffield Lacemakers, Ecclesall Woods Discovery Centre, resident Blacksmith Forge and Little Mesters Stan Shaw and Pete Goss – at 91 this year Stan Shaw is the oldest Little Mester still working in the city! Local makers and artisans include sculptors, glassworkers, ceramicists, printmakers, potters, jewellers, silversmiths and metalworkers, illustrators and artists of Sheffield scenes. The market supports and welcomes colleges, community, charity and young enterprise stalls for aspiring business people.

•   All that Glitters - unique homeware, gifts and jewellery - perfect for stocking fillers and surprises. This area is home to a wide range of gifts from jewellery, wooden toys and books to Green Men, local photographers and artists, handmade soaps, candles, rugs, textiles and prints.

•   Christmas Shop - handmade greetings cards and decorative treasures to get your Christmas shopping all wrapped up. With local charities and makers selling reindeer food, Christmas Eve gifts and popular Russian dolls!

• End of the Island Emporium - an eclectic array of stalls including a host of Sheffield Makers and charities offering iconic Sheffield and Victorian inspired family friendly gifts!

• Festive Food - tastes from around the world, from traditional hog roast, pie and peas, toasties and pancakes to Mexican, Indian and Russian delicacies! Visitors can enjoy Mulled Wine, a prosecco bar, Millowners Arms real ale and themed sweet treats, cupcakes, homemade preserves and traditional spice.

Dickensian themed entertainment offers thrills for all ages with a traditional fairground with Ferris Wheel, a Victorian Music Hall Stage with brass bands, choirs, folk singers and variety acts and wandering living history Dickensian characters plus a snow queen on stilts, the Sheffield Giants, morris dancers and mischievous Victorian pickpockets!

See the mighty River Don Engine in steam on the hour, every hour with displays telling the fascinating story of steam power as part of the museum’s Heritage Lottery funded project - Sheffield 1916: Steel, Steam and Power.

‘Santa Industries Co.’ entertains youngsters as they join in the ‘industrial’ processes at work as Santa prepares for his busiest time of year. Design, Manufacturing and production - join Santa’s Elves in Santa’s Workshop to help make decorations for his Grotto and see the Blacksmith making reindeer ‘shoes’. Administration, Transportation and Export - write a letter to Santa to hand deliver to Santa’s HQ (Grotto) and stop at our S’Elfie sleigh and reindeer enclosure on the way! Children visiting Santa’s HQ Grotto receive a traditional ‘gold’ chocolate coin and orange and for our 25th Silver Anniversary - a Victorian memento keepsake*.

Niki Connolly, Events and Marketing Manager at Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust says:

“We are celebrating our 25th Victorian Market and we want to make our silver anniversary year truly memorable for both first-time and regular visitors with two magical twilight finale performances. There is also the chance to purchase market souvenirs such as a pewter mulled wine cup which can be engraved by Wentworth Pewter for that personal gift, and a Victorian memento keepsake for children visiting Santa’s HQ Grotto.

We would also like to thank our Stallholders, Performers, Suppliers, Staff and Volunteers and everyone involved in the market over the years. Visitors tell us it signals the ‘start of Christmas’ for them, something that means a lot to us. This year promises an extra special sprinkle of Christmas cheer for everyone, as well as unique shopping opportunities across our atmospheric museum grounds.”
