Access Information for Kelham Island Museum
Mobility access
The ground floor is level throughout, except for the gallery which houses the
Crossley Gas Engine that can only be accessed by steps. The first floor transport
gallery can be accessed by lift. The courtyard between the car park and main entrance
is cobbled.
Toilets
There are male and female level access toilets on the ground floor, and an accessible
toilet next to the café, which is opposite the main entrance to the museum. A second
accessible toilet is on the first floor for use with the upstairs gallery and education
rooms.
Baby changing facilities
There is a table in the ladies toilets, please ask at the reception desk close by for
the changing mat.
Braille
Some text relating to objects on display is provided in Braille.
Guide and assistance dogs
Guide and assistance dogs are welcome within the museum.
Café
The museum café is at ground level opposite the main entrance to the museum.
Parking
There is parking for 50 vehicles within the museum grounds. Access from the car park
to the museum is over cobbles.
Telephone
There is a public payphone available in the museum entrance.
Touching objects
Many of the objects in the museum are working machines and can cause injury to the
visitor if touched, others may suffer damage if touched. Therefore there are very
few objects available at present for touching.
Wheelchairs to loan
There are two wheelchairs available to borrow. Please ask at the entrance or
reception desk.
Children's activities
All areas used for children's activities are mobility accessible. Some activities
for children with special educational needs are available at certain times.
