Could you be a Trustee for Sheffield Museums?

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved with Sheffield Museums at the beginning of a new stage in the life of the city’s museums.

We are looking for up to three new Trustees and three Associate Trustees who will help shape our future.

About Us

Sheffield Museums Trust was established in April 2021, following the merger of Museums Sheffield and Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust. We care for the city’s collections of art, human and industrial history, and natural science, alongside the Guild of St George’s John Ruskin collection and the Ken Hawley Collection Trust’s Hawley Tool Collection.

We are an independent charity that operates six of the city’s leading museums and heritage sites: Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Graves Gallery, Kelham Island Museum, Millennium Gallery, Shepherd Wheel and Weston Park Museum.

We work with our communities to tell the remarkable story of Sheffield and its people, and celebrate its reputation for excellence in craft, making and innovation. Together with local, regional and national partners, we showcase home-grown creative talent and bring outstanding cultural experiences to the city.

About the Roles

As a Trustee you will act with care and skill to ensure that the charity is sustainable, well-managed and that it delivers its charitable objectives. You’ll work with the leadership team to help shape the future of Sheffield Museums and you’ll take part in meetings, oversee governance, policy and performance and come along to events and exhibitions. Most importantly, you’ll be part of a great team.

Trustees are appointed for an initial three-year term, renewable up to a maximum of nine years. The time commitment will be variable and will average one to two days a month.

Associate Trustee

The Associate Trustee role is a developmental role for those interested in building their knowledge and experience in the sector. As an Associate Trustee you’ll take part in a 12-month programme that introduces the museums and the principles of governance. The time commitment will be pre-agreed and will average one day a month.

Over the 12 months, you will work with our Trustees and the museums leadership team to build your knowledge and experience. At the end of the 12 months, you will be invited to share your learning with the Board and explore future opportunities. Our aim is that you will be equipped to take on a Trustee role whether that is with us or with another charity.

We are looking for people who have a passion for the work of the museums and who share our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
