Tour: Benjamin Huntsman's Crucible Steel


Take a tour around Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and find out about Benjamin Huntsman’s industry-changing invention of the crucible steel method.

Clockmaker Benjamin Huntsman began experimenting with steel in 1740 on a quest to produce better quality materials for his clock and watch parts.  Over the next two years he would come to develop a new method of steel production using crucible pots that would revolutionise the industry.  

Hear about the life and legacy of this local innovator and learn how the crucible steel process was used at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet.
