Museums Dementia Friendly Cafés: Reading Objects Display

The display showcases some of the creative observations and objects that people living with Dementia have made over the last six months at the Museums Dementia Friendly Café Reading Objects Project.

Sheffield Reading Friends Programme part of the Dementia Action Alliance, Sheffield has been working in collaboration with Sheffield Museums and Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust.  Inspired by the Museum’s collections, a Reading Objects project began when people living with dementia enjoyed looking at the collections which triggered imaginations, stories and memories.

Over the last six months the café members have participated in creative activities including historic object handling, drawing, model making to encourage participants to tell stories, share their memories and donate objects for a display at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and later in the year a second display at Western Park Museum.

The selected objects and observations tell stories of growing up, work life, trips abroad, football and the social history and heritage of Sheffield.

The Museums Dementia-Friendly Cafés are for people living with dementia and their families and carers.

The cafés are free, informal drop-in sessions where participants can come along, enjoy a cuppa, meet new people and take part in hands-on activities.

The cafés are once a month and alternate between museum venues: Weston Park Museums, the Millennium Galleries, Kelham Island Museum and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. The cafes are a partnership between Museums Sheffield and Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust

We would like to say a big thank you to all the people who have kindly loaned objects for the Dementia Friendly Café participants, accompanying staff, family members and volunteers!
