All aboard as our popular event returns to close our public season offering a spectacular selection of steam engines and rollers and a fun day for all!
The Steam Gathering event at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet marks the finale of the 2008/09 season. Taking place over the weekend of the 3 October, it is the first time the event has taken place over 2 days and is completely FREE to visitors!
The Steam Gathering is Abbeydale's most popular event and will bring to life the unique story of the Industrial Hamlet, showing how people lived at home and at work in a scythe and steel works during the 18th century.
This celebration of steam will bring together a whole host of steam engines, demonstrations, living history characters, live art and a whole variety of family and children's activities. For the steam lovers amongst you, there will be steam engines, steam rollers, road locomotives and Ridgeway Forge Blacksmith's providing traditional forge work demonstrations.
For younger visitors, not only will Point Blank Theatre group be on hand to provide a whole host of activities around the Steam theme, Living History characters will be taking families on tours of the Hamlet and recruiting young chimney sweeps, whilst our Victorian Housekeeper will be demonstrating formal baking in the Manager's House. Kids can get up close to our miniature traction engines and discover how they work first hand with the Mamod Steam Model and the Kelham Island Flyer on display.
Art D'ore, under the tutelage of local artist, Brian Smith, will be holding their very first exhibition at the Hamlet and will be producing watercolour paintings on site of both Hamlet scenes and the mighty steam engines. Children can also join in to create a giant art tableau telling the story of the Industrial Hamlet. Once finished, the tableau will be put on display at the Hamlet.
If you are a Steam Engine enthusiast with a model or miniature to show, please get in touch 0114 2010610 or email events@simt.co.uk
